A common intruder, the Sparrow is often referred to as an aggressive nuisance in the bird world. But before you get out those pellet guns, consider trying one of these methods to scoot these little troublemakers on down the road.

Destroy Their Nest

Destroying a Sparrows nest, once built, or even during the construction phase can help to rid your property of your Sparrow population. Make sure to get rid of all the nest, eggs and even any baby birds that may be in the nest. Sparrows are constant nest builders and never seem happy with the nest they have, so you may have to remove a nest several times before they move to another location.

Use caution while removing nests, often their nests are not in convenient locations. The use of a laddar, step-stool or pole is recommended for high reaches.

Scare Them

Sparrows are afraid of Owls. Because Owls hunt Sparrow, the use of owl decoys can discourage Sparrows from nesting nearby. Plastic owl decoys can be found at most of your lawn and garden stores. Strategically place owls in positions where they tend to nest.

Trapping

There are several trapping products available. Traps are now self re-setting, and some can catch and hold up to 40 birds at one time. These products are convenient, because they eliminate the need to check several times throughout the day. You then release your captured birds at a new location. Another option, is to donate them to a local bird rehabilitation center.

Remember its a Sparrows nature to out smart!

The small Sparrow is not native to North America. In fact, it is a threat to our native birds, such as the Bluebird. It is not illegal to pull out the pellet gun on this bird, but with just a little bit of effort you can have a peaceful outcome for all involved.
