How to Build a Garden Box

November 2, 2009 | In: Outdoors

Garden boxes are used for a variety of different reasons. People use garden boxes to grow in cold weather months and in warm weather. A garden box built for cold weather, has a clear lid to allow sun to warm the plants and dirt in the box. A garden box can be used in areas where the soil is poor or rocky. Potting soil can be used to fill a garden box in order to have the ideal soil for a variety of plants.

To build a garden box you will need hammer or drill, nails or screws, 2×4’s or 2×6’s, and if you will be making a cover either clear plastic or Plexiglas.

*Choose an area for your garden box. The box should be placed in an area that gets enough sunlight to properly grow your chosen plants. Clear the area of weeds and other debris. Do not use a weed killer if you plan on immediately using your garden box.

*You will need 4 pieces of wood. A garden box can be rectangular or square shaped. Lay the wood pieces in the desired shape. 2×4’s or 2×6’s are easy to work with, and very affordable. You can buy them pre-cut at your local lumber store. If you need a deeper box, then go with the 2×6’s.

*Use either nails or screws to connect the pieces of wood together. A drill and screws are usually sturdier, and easier to do. The sides need to be as even as possible to ensure your dirt will not run out through mismatched corners. Each end of the wood should be flush against the end that it is being attached to. Picture an L shape. The shortest piece gets connected to the inside of the longer piece.

*Once you have constructed your box, you can now fill it with potting soil or fresh, clean, weed free dirt. If you will be using a lid on your garden box, see below. If you will not be using a lid, your box is ready for planting.

*A lid can simply be a piece of Plexiglas that fits over the top of your box. You will need to be able to lift the Plexiglas to allow airflow. Clear plastic can be used if it is thick enough to withstand rain or snow. The plastic can be attached using small nails or a staple gun. One side will need to be left undone to allow entry into the box.
